The Rule
Use the contrivance that most easily enables you to communicate the story.
"I could tell you with some certainty what happens next..." — Wade Watts
"Well, that's a relief, because you're the author!" — Michael J. Nelson
Cline stumbles over telling parts of the story that aren't directly witnessed by his main character, which is a common challenge in writing First Person stories. The boys express exasperation, given that the action takes place in a VR, where there's no reason to believe the whole scene wouldn't have been recorded from many different points of view.
Commentary
A curious recurring element of RP1 is Cline's utter unwillingness to use certain obvious elements of VR. A creative solution here could've been to move to an omniscient narrator skillfully weaving various meaningful moments of this action set piece, with Wade being the editor or even just seeing it after the fact on a streaming site. (Which you sort of think he'd want to do, minimally, considering the supposed significance of the action on the outcome of the story.)
