Commentary
This recurs in many forms in modern novels, often in the passive form of "what can only be described as...". Somewhat similar to All That We But See or Seem, rather than a substitute for genuine depth or mystery, this trope is a substitute for humor and wit. A camera take that says, "You're not gonna believe how wacky this was!"
